How is it that I came to love creating bookends?
Well—In the year of our Lord 2020, a lot of things changed! I went from working at a fast, full time pace as a scenic artist and designer to the entire industry completely halted by the novel coronavirus, essentially overnight. The world stopped in the face of it. In the wake of this global phenomenon, I suddenly found myself with open time. Time to be at home—to reflect, to create, to read. Time to dive into the many books that had awaited me on the shelves, ready to engage in my love of literature once again.
I was sourcing new inspiration. I felt the drive to create, to try something new. As I was learning about how to become an entrepreneur through my art and build an online platform for this new path forward, I reflected on the many things I love and what I could possibly create from them. The essence of it all originates in my passion for storytelling, and so it followed that I began illustrating and creating pieces of art that were inspired by my home library. I had never made bookends before—but I kept seeing new potential for how to incorporate completely unique, found pieces into one universal “L” shape. Especially with so many redirecting their lives and careers from the nucleus of home, I wanted to create something that would bring creative inspiration and joy into those spaces.
And thus, I began making bookends. As I find new pieces, new ideas flow and build upon the old ones. It’s a branch of my art that will constantly evolve with every new creation, and each discovery along the way.
