Moonstone is a crystal long-associated with travel, deeply connected with the energetic essence of the moon and etched into the historical legacy of travel by sea. Mariners carried moonstone on long journeys as an amulet, believing it provided protection on the open water and in the dark of night. In Ancient Rome, moonstone was connected to the goddess Diana, and believed to be a solidified form of moonbeams.
Moonstone is comprised of two minerals, orthoclase and albite. This stone’s iconic pearlescent sheen is caused by the schiller effect. When these two types of feldspar minerals grow in alternating layers, this creating a phenomena known as adularescence—the play of light so reminiscent of the moon’s luminescent glow.
Also known as the stone of new beginnings, moonstone is renowned for its incredible energetic properties. It is believed to encourage safe travels, and draw serendipity, synchronicity, inspiration, guidance, and good fortune. Moonstone calls to our inner adventurer, as it draws us to unearth our hidden talents and explore new paths—to illuminate the dark of a new beginning. Black moonstone in particular is associated with the energy of the new moon, which is an ideal time of intention setting and exploring the sacred mystery of the shadow side.
Ultimately, these energies encourage us to trust and find peace within the space of the unknowable, while actively creating a life lived in harmony with the self.
